Ketamine Therapy
Conditions We Treat with Ketamine Therapy
According to Psychology Today, ketamine is a medication originally developed as a human anesthetic. Unlike other anesthetics, it does not depress breathing or blood pressure.

Ketamine therapy refers to the use of ketamine for treating mental health conditions, particularly depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to show effects, ketamine can often produce rapid improvements in mood, sometimes within hours.
The therapy typically involves a healthcare provider administering ketamine in a controlled environment. Sessions are usually short, and patients are monitored for side effects.
Ketamine can be used to treat conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, and even chronic migraines that impact quality of life and cause emotional distress. Ketamine, in its various forms, has been shown to have rapid-acting antidepressant effects and can be effective for treatment-resistant cases where other medications have not worked. Here’s how each form can help:
1. Nasal ketamine (compounded, not approved by insurance)
• Potential Benefits: Nasal ketamine has also been used off-label for other conditions such as anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and migraines. The nasal form allows for rapid absorption, providing quick relief for symptoms.• Effectiveness: Multiple studies have indicated that nasal ketamine, including compounded versions, can rapidly reduce symptoms of depression, particularly in individuals with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The fast-acting nature of ketamine, compared to traditional antidepressants, makes it an appealing option.
• Advantages: Non-invasive and often less intimidating than injections.
2. Oral ketamine
• Uses: Oral ketamine is used off-label to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and in some cases, chronic migraines.
• Effectiveness: While absorption is slower than nasal or injection forms, oral ketamine can still provide significant symptom relief, especially in patients with mood disorders.
• Suitability: It can be an option for at-home therapy, making it more accessible for ongoing care, though it may require more careful monitoring due to slower onset.
Migraines and Mental Health
• Chronic migraines are known to cause emotional distress, which can lead to or worsen conditions like depression and anxiety. Ketamine’s mechanism of action not only helps alleviate depressive symptoms but can also reduce migraine severity and frequency, improving overall quality of life. -
Targeting the glutamate system instead of serotonin receptors, ketamine therapy differs from traditional treatments because it repairs neural damage in the brain, allowing for new neural connections to form.
Research suggests that ketamine therapy may work by increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, promoting neural plasticity, and providing a dissociative experience that can help patients process emotions.
While many people report significant benefits, ketamine therapy is still being studied, and it’s important for patients to work closely with their healthcare providers to weigh the risks and benefits.

Ketamine therapy is effective in over 70% of patients with treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder.
Administered by a medical professional, ketamine infusion therapy helps patients to reclaim their lives and live pain-free.

Ketamine can produce significant relief from symptoms after administration, but the response time is individually based. If you have any side effects at all, they usually subside by the end of the treatment session.
